The Pros Discuss the “Best” ISO for Underwater Imaging

Hosted by Backscatter, the Digital Shootout sees attendees participate in a couple of weeks of intense underwater photography training, and with a guest-to-staff ratio of 3:1, there are a lot of pro underwater photographers and videographers around to learn from. During the last one—the 20th anniversary workshop in Little Cayman—Backscatter decided to put the pros on the spot, on camera, with some tricky little questions. Last week, we reported on the first two: One, What is the best aperture to use? And two, What is the best shutter speed to use?  This week, we complete the exposure triangle with the ISO question.

So, what is the “best” ISO for photo and video? Well, for starters, it depends on who you ask. If you ask video pros like Cristian Dimitrius, Joel Penner or James Emery, you’ll get rather different answers than if you ask photo pros like Jim Decker, Erin Quigley, or Todd Winner. In “What Is The Best ISO For Underwater Photography & Video?,” you’ll hear from all these pro shooters, and others, and once again, there are plenty of interesting perspectives here to get you thinking.

Backscatter tells us that these three videos are just the first in a series created from interviews with the pros conducted during the recent Digital Shootout, so make sure to keep on the lookout for more. To learn more about the Digital Shootout, head over to the website. You can also reserve your spot at the next event—once again in Little Cayman—from June 15th–29th, 2024.
