The potential of AI in India is huge: PM Modi said after meeting with Sam Altman, creator of ChatGPT

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, whose company handles artificial intelligence technologies and created ChatGPT, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and discussed various aspects of AI including the need global regulatory requirements.

In addition to India, Altman is on a six-country tour this week, including Israel, Jordan, Qatar, the UAE and Korea.

In a tweet after meeting Altman, Prime Minister Modi wrote that the potential of AI in India’s tech ecosystem is huge — especially among young people.

“We welcome all cooperation that can accelerate our digital transformation to empower our citizens,” Prime Minister Modi wrote.

During a lesson at IIIT DeliAltman said they discussed the opportunities ahead of the country and what the country should do in the field of AI.

“We also felt the need to think about global regulation, which prevents some of the downsides from happening,” says Altman.

Altman says his company is now self-regulating.

“We spent almost 8 months on GPT making sure it was secure enough to release. We built the technology, we worked with organizations to figure out what the limits should be, and tested it all. We think coordination is important. So self-regulation is very important. That’s what we want to deliver. The world shouldn’t be completely in the hands of companies, ” Altman said at the session.

Talking about his plans for India, Altman said that the first thing he will do in India is fund startups.

“We are always amazed and grateful for the quality of India starting a business“, he said, adding that he has met a number of startups in India.

With India’s strong IT industry and a large data set, AI-based utilities can capitalize on the huge potential in the country. Although AI is still in its early stages.

The government cites NASSCOM data in February this year that says the total number of AI jobs in India is estimated at around 416,000 professionals. The growth rate of the industry is estimated at 20-25%.

Furthermore, AI is expected to contribute an additional $957 billion to the Indian economy by 2035.

Many countries around the world have been using AI technologies to provide better services and reduce human intervention, but there are still concerns about job cuts as technology advances.
