The junior college pitcher tackles an opponent who hit the homer in a game between Weatherford College and North Central Texas College

A Texas junior college pitcher tackled a hitter who hit a home run during the home game between Weatherford College and North Central Texas College on Wednesday.

At the start of the sixth inning of a seven-round match, NCTC’s Josh Phillips took the lead home and round the bases, celebrating with his third-base coach. Pitcher Owen Woodward, a 6-3, 195-pound sophomore, threw down his glove and sprinted toward Phillips.crush him as soon as he turns around and sees Woodward.

It’s not clear what prompted Woodward’s reaction. Neither school could be reached for comment, but Weatherford released a statement Wednesday afternoon.

“We are shocked and disappointed at what happened in our game today,” Jeff Lightfoot, Weatherford’s baseball coach, said in a statement. “We do not tolerate this type of behavior. We have worked hard to build a program of the highest standards. We are completely embarrassed by this incident and we apologize to North College. Central Texas and WC baseball fans. This type of behavior cannot be tolerated.”

The school said it was investigating the incident.

“The WC student in question will face potential disciplinary action from the Office of Student Services up to and possibly including expulsion,” the school said. “The Weatherford College Police Department is also investigating the incident and has released statements.”

Lightfoot says Woodward hasn’t had any prior incidents.

Umpires suspended the game after the dispute and ensuing brawl. The game is the first in a series of four scheduled games.
