The era of fake CCTV has really arrived

While Jamal Khashoggi While being carefully slaughtered in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, a man (clumsy and dissimilar) is trying on his shoes and clothes. The plan was for the impostor to appear on CCTV as he left the consulate and walked back to Khashoggi’s whereabouts. The plan ultimately failed because Turkish intelligence installed the consulate’s wiretaps and recorded exactly what happened.

This is one of the first attempts by state actors to manipulate other states (or the public) through CCTV footage. However, recent actions by Iranian state television have taken this type of information warfare to a new level.

To understand this and the new threats that fake CCTV poses, it is important to know the three types information disorder: 1) misinformation, which refers to misinformation without the intention of harming someone, 2) misinformation, which refers to misinformation with the intent to cause harm, and 3) misinformation falsity (borrowed from French), is factual information published with intent to cause harm, the most obvious example of which is revenge porn or leaks.

Although disinformation has been widely discussed as a powerful weapon used by state and non-state actors, especially with the rapid proliferation of AI tools capable of generating produce moving or static texts, sounds, and images, but it is misinformation that creates the most potential opportunities for bad actors. Since most common forms of malicious information require manipulation of the context rather than the information itself, they can scale cheaper and faster. It is often more difficult to expose the manipulated context of a piece of credentials.

The most common cases of misinformation often entail changing the context of the real information or embedding it in a different context. For example, someone might take a real picture of a crime scene in one part of the world and, by intentionally changing the date and place, associate it with another event somewhere else in the world. the world to damage the reputation of a competitor or rival group. In addition, deliberately mistranslating someone’s words or using selective quotes can completely change the meaning of what is said. Malicious information can also arise from leaks and hacks that expose genuine but private information to the public.

Most information wars use both disinformation and misinformation. For example, Deepfakes are a combination of the two. An example of this would be famous manipulating Obama’s speech, deliberately used his genuine voice, facial expressions, and gestures to express completely fabricated words. Sophisticated disinformation operations also often incorporate misinformation and misinformation. The case of Khashoggi may have been unsuccessful, but the complicated case of Nika Shakarami during the recent protests in Iran deserves a detailed examination.

Nika Shakarami is a 17-year-old girl who was killed during protests in September 2022 over the death of Mahsa Amini while in police custody. Nika, a high school dropout, left home in a western province and moved with her mother’s sister to a working-class neighborhood south of Tehran. She works at one of dozens of cafes in central Tehran, frequented by university students.

Her disappearance was announced by her aunt within the first few days of the protests. Because of her photos and videos at the protests, many suspect that she was killed by aggressive riot police, who did not hesitate to hit the protesters on the head with rubber batons. brutally young men and women. The regime fears being blamed for the death of another young woman like Mahsa, as this will likely cause a huge wave of protests in the streets. There are a few other young girls who have disappeared, and the regime needs to turn the story over or at least divide the public over the cause of their sudden death.
