When Microsoft bought Bethesda last year, it raises the question of what console their future games will end up on. It wasn’t too big of a drama for us in PC land, Microsoft delivered most of their new stuff to us and a lot of Xbox. But for PlayStation owners, the drama has arrived. Phil Spencer said he saw The Elder Scrolls 6 as a PC and Xbox exclusive, like Starfield.
“It’s not about punishing any other platform, just like I basically believe all platforms can keep going” he told GQ. “But to be on Xbox, I want us to be able to bring the whole complete package of what we have. And that’s going to be true when I think about Elder Scrolls VI. That’s going to be true when I think about anything. franchise period.”
Some of those franchises already have existing deals with Sony, mind you. Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo has been set to be a timed exclusive on PC and PS5 since pre-acquisition, and Microsoft has stuck with that. In the future, I assume future games from Arkane and Tango could be glued to PC and Xbox.
GQ also tried to get a little more information about TES6 from Bethesda director Todd Howard. He said nothing more than, “We’re designing”, and that they were trying to make it a “decade game”. However, I’m pretty sure they already know how to do it, you just need to release as many new versions as possible with some improvements and additions every few years, right? The right?
Even Howard’s stepson Bored of waiting for The Elder Scrolls 6. I definitely hope the kid has a PC or Xbox.
The GQ interview was conducted as part of the Xbox’s 20th anniversary celebration, which Microsoft celebrated last night with a surprise early release of Halo Infinite’s free online multiplayer.
