The adopter asked ‘Why would you marry a dying old dog?’ Got the best answer

Shelters do their best to help rescue puppies find their forever family as quickly as possible. Life in the shelter is certainly not ideal and can be a bit stressful. But sometimes, there are special circumstances that can take longer to come to a happy ending.

Mitch, the Treeing Walker Coonhound, is one of those cases. But after seven long years of waiting, the 12-year-old puppy has finally found the perfect permanent home.

When Mitch first arrived Highland Humane Society back in 2016, he was emaciated and extremely stressed. But as he got older, and with lots of love and care from the shelter’s care workers, Mitch became gentler. However, as time went on, it became more and more difficult to find him a permanent home.

Sadly, the older the dogs, the less people are interested in adopting them.

“Some people have said to me, ‘why would you go get a dog your age only to have it die on you?’ And I said, ‘so he can have a home first. It’s not about me; it’s about Mitch. He needs a home, and luckily we can provide that for him,” said Theresa Shular, Mitch’s new mom.

Even though Mitch is in perfect health and even appeared on a TV news clip that made him the center of attention in 2019, he still had no luck finding a forever family. But a video that the shelter recently posted TikTok describes some of the details of his heartbreaking story that eventually helped him find a family of his own.

“I cried when I saw it for the first time. I cried watching it for the second time. I thought about it and prayed about it for a few days.” Mitch’s new mother said.

Mitch is no more Treasurer-Highland Humane Society’s longest residence. Today, he spends his time lying on the porch, sunbathing and walking around the vast grounds he now calls home dear. It may have been a long wait, but Mitch has finally found a family that will love and admire him for the rest of his life.

David Stroud, director of the Cashiers-Highland Humane Society, said: “I believe if Mitch has one message for all of us, it is this: never give up.
