Tesla Model Y receiving update in mid-2024 – report

Tesla is reportedly gearing up to begin mass production of a refreshed version of the top-selling Model Y electric SUV in Shanghai, China.

As reported by Bloomberg, the company is currently doing preparation work at its Shanghai plant for the updated Model Y and could start mass production as soon as mid-2024.

This updated version of the Model Y will reportedly feature more obvious exterior and interior changes than the recent Chinese-market model update.

It’s unclear if the changes will be similar to the recently updated Tesla Model 3 ‘Highland’ electric sedan that just began being delivered to Australian customers.

The updated Model 3 receives a slicker front design with a simpler lower section than before, as well as restyled tail lights at the back.

Under the skin, the updated Model 3 features a revised suspension with new springs, dampers and subframe mounting points designed to deliver a more comfortable ride.

Changes have also been made to the Michelin tyres, which are designed to offer more compliance through softer sidewalls – along with better noise suppression than is currently offered.

Inside, the new Model 3 has a new screen up front… with the same dimensions (15 inches) and processor as before.

The steering wheel is now, with no column stalks for indicators or cruise control. Instead, there are capacitive-touch buttons on the wheel.
An ambient lighting strips runs along the base of the windscreen, and it’s now possible to turn off the passenger air vents.

Rear passengers get an 8.0-inch display to control media and climate, along with air vents and USB-C ports.

Bloomberg reports the first batch of the updated Model Y will be made from the “second phase” of Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory.

Production will reportedly be suspended for around a week during the New Year holiday period for a partial upgrade, according to an undisclosed person.

There will also be more adjustments made to the production facility ahead of mass production of the updated Model Y.

The Tesla Model Y was first revealed globally in 2019 and first arrived in locally during 2022. Australian-specification models are currently produced in Shanghai, China.

A subtle update was revealed for the Chinese market in October. This brought some minor exterior and interior changes, as well as range and acceleration boosts to certain variants.

The electric SUV has since overtaken the Model 3 electric sedan to become the company’s best-selling vehicle.

It’s currently the best-selling electric vehicle (EV) in Australia with 27,418 examples sold this year until November 2023. It’s also on track to being the best-selling car globally.
