The base price of the Tesla Model Y is currently $60,000, which is higher than the original base price of the Model S from 2012.
A recent check out on Tesla’s website shows that the base Model Y Long Range now starts at $60,190. This version has a 318-mile range, dual-motor all-wheel drive, and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, according to Tesla. Performance Model Y—the only other trim level available—starts at $65,190. It’s rated to have a range of 303 miles, but can hit 0-60 mph in the claimed 3.5 seconds.

With the absence of a Model Y Standard Range, that makes the base price of the Model Y $17,000 higher than earlier this year, when the Standard Range variant is still available. Tesla just increased the base price of the Model Y by $2,000 at the beginning of October. This latest increase, made in the shadow of a proposed EV . tax credit amendment that would again make some Tesla cars eligible, raising the price by $4,000.
For reference, the initial base price of 2012 Model WILL is $57,400 (plus destination). At the end of 2012, 2013 model went up to $59,900. Today’s version of the Model S has a much more standard range, standard all-wheel drive, more sophisticated technology, and a base price of $96,190.

Tesla is gearing up to begin Model Y production at its new plant in Texas. Cars built in Texas will have 4680 higher density battery cells plus new methods of producing body structures. The larger 4680 cells could also be what finally brings the long-delayed Tesla Semi into production. Tesla has said its modest battery increase so far could allow for some deliveries before the end of the year.
Tesla has also indicated that Model 3 and Model Y vehicles with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells – a chemical currently used only in China – are also likely for the US market. Perhaps that will put the Model Y back into the realm of affordability for more families.
