Tesla boosts full self-driving to $12,000, adds ‘Assertive’ mode
Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted on Friday that the electric carmaker would raise the U.S. price of its advanced driver assistant software called “Full Self Driving” to $12,000 on January 17.
The 20% price hike comes less than two years after Tesla raised the price of its Fully Self-Driving Vehicle (FSD) to $10,000 from $8,000 in 2020.
“Tesla FSD price up to $12k on Jan. 17. US only.” Musk tweeted. Also, “The FSD price will increase as we get closer to the release of the FSD production code.”
Tesla has been expanding the release of upgraded FSD driver-assistance features – like automatic lane changes and turns, but these features don’t help the car drive itself. As we always point out, the name “Full Self-Driving” is misleading, The same goes for Autopilot. These are not legitimate SAE Level 4 autonomy programs and should not be trusted.
The Verge report that the new FSD version 10.3 – still a beta version – has “Assertive Mode” that allows the system to skim stop signs and perform other sketchy driving maneuvers. This was the version that was originally released in October but was pushed back two days later because of its performance on traffic lights turn left, among other problems.
As for the “Assertive” mode, Tesla notes that “in this filing, X model will have a smaller follow-on distance, make lane changes more frequently, won’t exit the overtaking lanes, and may stop the vehicle from rolling. “
Wheelchair stopping is illegal, camping in the left lane is also illegal in many states, and tailgating is always a bad idea.
