Mercedes goes to the luxurious Mad Max with the concept of an off-road coupe EV coupe Project Maybach
Mercedes-Benz on Wednesday unveiled a very different kind of EV concept for its super-luxury sub-brand Maybach.
The Project Maybach concept is an off-road coupe designed in collaboration with the late fashion designer Virgil Abloh, who passed away earlier this week at the age of 41. The after-reveal concept combines proportions. Exaggerated coupe proportions with Mad Max-style design elements.
Looks a bit like an evolution of pure electricity Mercedes-Maybach 6 concept the brand showed off in 2016, the Project Maybach coupe is 19 feet longer, but still just a two-seater. Much of that length is occupied by a long transparent hood, under which solar panels are located.

The large grille is typical of luxury coupes, but we’re not used to seeing the increased ride height, fender flares, tubular roof racks and light bars on a vehicle like this. However, the definitely post-apocalyptic aesthetic is gaining popularity for luxury electric cars. Just look at Tesla Cybertruck and GMC Hummer EV pickup truck.
Mercedes isn’t the only one to play with long hood proportions, either. Audi recently showed Skysphere electric sports car concept with a similarly hooded long silhouette. The Skysphere is one of three “spherical” concepts developed by Audi’s Artemis team, which was founded in 2020 and aims to accelerate electric vehicle development.
Now, the Project Maybach concept shows another potential shape for Mercedes’ future unsurpassed luxury – alongside the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV that will likely be built. in U.S.A. Foreshadowed by a concept Unveiled at the 2021 Munich auto show, the Maybach EQS will likely be based on the upcoming Mercedes EQS SUV, which will be a premium rival to the EQS sedan currently coming to the US.
