Electric vehicles from Hyundai and Kia may soon receive new silicon-carbide power modules to increase range.
Semiconductor company STMicroelectronics (ST) said last week in a press release that it has been selected by Hyundai to supply silicon-carbide power modules for electric vehicles based on the manufacturer’s E-GMP platform. automotive, the foundation of the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and Genesis GV60. Various E-GMP models are on the way, including the Ioniq 6 sedan and the Ioniq 7 and Kia EV9 SUV.

Silicon-carbide technology allows higher operating voltages than conventional silicon semiconductors, allowing for faster charging as well as more efficient energy savings, thereby improving operating range. Versions of EV6 and Ioniq 5 . available topping 300 miles of range at launch, so they’re not really lacking in that area.
The company said it will supply the third-generation Acepack Drive hardware to Hyundai. While it is stated that production of these modules will begin in March 2023, no specific timeline is given for integration with E-GMP vehicles. Hyundai also hasn’t said which of its E-GMP models will be the first to feature silicon-carbide power modules.
