Team Devin Haney arrives in Australia
Devin ‘The Dream’ Haney took to the field for a rematch with former champion George Kambosos Jr as the lightweight team awaited.
Haney has won WBA, WBC, IBF, IBO and Rings title from Kambosos back in June after the Australian’s shock win over Teofimo Lopez. The Melbourne fight is over, with Haney showing off his elite prowess on his way to becoming the first undisputed lightweight champion since Pernell Whitaker in 1990.
Haney and his team catch up with Sporting News Australia as they touch down, the young boxer talks about his attitude towards bouts and whether we’ll see the best of him.
“Still a hunter mentality, watch it on October 16order … No [you haven’t seen the best of me], not yet. You will see more of Devin Haney. Not the best on October 16, but more.”
When asked what he thought about Kambosos’ intention to retire if he lost to Haney twice in a row, the champion disagreed.
“I don’t think he [Kambosos] should retire. I think he’s a great opponent, he’s a big name in the sport – just because he lost to me doesn’t mean he needs to retire.”
Haney’s father and coach, Bill, talked about the dangers of a rematch – namely the challenge of now having nothing to lose.
“We know that George is a desperate man, he is an unpredictable man, he is a man with everything to win and nothing to lose at this point – so we’re prepared for the irreparable if that makes sense.”
“[Defending the belts] would be another step towards the greatness he wanted in boxing. Being on the Mount Rushmore of boxing. Great all time. To come and defend the belt as an undisputed champion would be a remarkable feat. “
It was nice to see him there supporting his son, he almost missed his first game due to visa issues and only got there on his day.
The undisputed title defense takes place on Saturday October 15 (Sunday 16 in Australia) and will be available in the US via ESPN+ and potentially landing on Sky Sports in the UK.
