Tata Group in talks with Wistron to manufacture iPhone in India: Report
Tata is said to have contacted Taiwanese supplier Wistron to set up an electronics manufacturing joint venture in India with the aim of making iPhones in the country. Tata aims to seek to harness Wistron’s expertise in product development, supply chain and assembly. If the deal is successful, Tata is expected to become the first Indian company to manufacture iPhones. Currently, these handsets are assembled by industry giants such as Wistron and Foxconn in China and India. The deal is expected to boost Wistron’s iPhone production capacity in India to five times its current output.
According to Bloomberg report, Tata may eventually acquire some equity in Wistron’s India operations. Companies can build a new manufacturing plant together. Rumors suggest that they will likely take both measures together.
It is believed that Tata could acquire part of Wistron’s manufacturing business beyond smartphones. Tata entered the smartphone supply chain as the company manufactures iPhone case components in southern India.
Apple was reported looking to ramp up production in India with launched iPhone 14 series.
Tata’s alleged deal with Wistron could also encourage other global electronics brands to consider India to assemble their devices and reduce reliance on China.
