Putting this on record is “something we didn’t expect” – Microids announced it would be released The Wolf Campaign Returns: The First Missionis the officially licensed “new vision” for Tatio’s Wolf activities began on the NES in 1987. The first was followed by three sequels, Thunderbolt Operation in 1998, Activities Wolf 3 in 1994, and Operation Tiger year 1998.

Operation Wolf is a light rail shooter that was one of the most popular arcade titles of the 80’s and Microids is continuing the legacy of the series. You’ll be able to play Operation Wolf Returns: First Mission either solo or co-op, but one thing we’re hoping for is the use of motion controls so we can use our Joy-Cons to aim and take down knock down the enemy.

Here are all the details from Microids’ press release:

Microids are delighted to announce The Wolf Campaign Returns: The First Mission with a handful of screenshots. Discover or rediscover Operation Wolf, the hit classic arcade game developed and published in 1987 by TAITO, one of the first to offer rail-side moving shooter action.

Developed by French studio Virtentlyz Gaming, The Wolf Campaign Returns: The First Mission remains faithful to the original game while offering a whole new art style. Players are invited to experience the mood of an 80s action movie thanks to the non-stop frantic gameplay!

In the game campaign, play solo or locally co-op as agents tasked with fighting a criminal organization. In addition to the drug and weapons trade, the organization led by the mysterious general Viper seems to have developed a weapon of mass destruction! After discovering several of the group’s bases, agents are dispatched to the site to dismantle the complex, remove weapons, and free the hostages from the various prison camps.

Operation Wolf Returns: First Mission will release in Fall 2022 both digitally and retail with Day One Edition for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 & Nintendo Switch and digital only on Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S and PC

The VR version of the game for Meta Quest 2 will be out in 2023.

Game Truth:
– The return of the hit arcade game of 1987!
– New art style
– Non-stop action
– A campaign for one or two players
– A survival mode (countless waves of enemies)
– A full arsenal of weapons (smg, shotgun, grenade launcher…)
– A leaderboard

This new game is launching this fall on Switch, so we’ll likely know about a release date soon. But for now, can we begin to pray that this will bring the railroad shooter genre back?
