Surprise – The Great Barrier Reef in Australia has ‘poped back up’ due to Climate Change – Are you buoyed by it?

I know you all will be surprised that a creature that survived a dinosaur killer has demonstrated an unexpected ability to cope with the level of global warming over the past 172 years.

Coral mantle has bounced back on two-thirds of the Great Barrier Reef, but scientists say its long-term health remains threatened by climate change.

Dr Mike Emslie leads the agency’s long-term monitoring program and said the reef shows it can still recover if given the chance.

He says the increase in coral cover from Cape York south to Proserpine is the result of a few years of relative calm.

While reefs have suffered negative effects from mass coral bleaching events in 2020 and again this summer, they are nowhere near as deadly as corals. events in 2016 and 2017.

The reef also benefits from a few years of not being knocked down by storms.

“Our latest surveys show that the Great Barrier Reef remains a wonderful place. It is still vibrant. It can still recover if given the chance,” Dr. Emslie said.

“But the effects of climate change will be increasingly progressive as we move forward. Whether it will always continue like this is a million dollar question. “

Concern about the existence of the Great Barrier Reef is absurd. Corals are among the most resilient creatures on the planet.

While the adult form of coral is anchored in place, every year the coral spawns billions of highly mobile larvae that reside in vantage points. Any damaged reef will be immediately invaded by adjacent reefs as soon as favorable conditions return.

During the rapid warming that occurred after the end of the ice age, sea levels rise at a staggering rate of 3ft/1m per century – sometimes even faster, up to 2.5m/century. Great Barrier Reef have sailed much fartherBut as sea levels rise, the reef simply moves, as corals proliferate rapidly in favorable locations on newly flooded coastal land.

Modern global warming and sea level rise pose no threat to Australia’s corals.
