Supercharged X-T3! We review the Fujifilm X-T5

Since the launch of the X-T1 in 2014, Fujifilm has had a wide range of cameras that appeal to both amateur and professional photographers. So with a 40MP APS-C sensor and up to 7 stops of IBIS, is the new Fujifilm X-T5 the best in its class and should you consider upgrading?

I have a hunch that this camera will be in great demand and probably on pre-order as well but it was thanks to the wonderful people at Ffordes Photography in Beauly that I got this camera. Fujifilm X-T5 on the day of its release and have shot nonstop with it ever since, just to see if it was as good as it was jailbroken. Capture everything in my sight from the TV screen to the L-mount on my old camera, waiting (but not hoping) for a flaw or frustration with any picture. Except for the random subject that I took with the camera, every image makes me happy in its quality.

Yes, I’m a Fuji fan and have to admit I’m very biased in that respect, but for the sake of judgment, it would be disrespectful to you, the reader, to write lyrical about something. when really it’s not worth it. Included in the article are a bunch of themes made during various field trips to test the camera, all unedited except for the film simulations applied so you can see the picture. images as they are.

Construction and handling

If you’re a fan of Fuji photography, you know exactly what to expect from this camera and it won’t disappoint. It’s a bit smaller than X-T4, but to be honest, I never even noticed what I thought was due to the more pronounced grip. Usually, I would have an L-stand included to help increase the size of my hand. The grip is sturdy but the Smallrig grip that I got on the X-T3 and X-T4 only gives me the correct grip size for my hand, and after a few days of using the camera, I felt like I needed one. female.

The Fujifilm X-T5 features a 40MP APS-C sensor, lower ISO of 125, sensor-shift image stabilization, a 3690k-dot electronic viewfinder, and better battery life, all in a well-built body weather resistant. The back doors resemble the X-T3 in that they are hinged unlike the X-T4’s soft rubber. If you were an X-T3 shooter, you would honestly think it was the same camera just supercharged as there is a minimal difference in size and weight between the two with the heavy X-T5 more than 18g.

A 425-point autofocus system with 7-stops of in-body image stabilization means you can get the most out of any shooting condition. The autofocus system is fast and can be set up to detect animals, birds, cars and motorcycles, as well as to detect eyes and faces. I’ve used Fujinon 18-135mm 3.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR with the camera and I’ve noticed much improved autofocus speed and I hope with newer lenses it’ll be even better. So it’s time to start saving again.

The X-T4’s fully articulating display is gone, replaced by the tilt and flip screen common on the X-T3. This camera is definitely aimed more at photographers than as an address for vloggers and videographers, but don’t let that stop you from considering this camera as there’s a useful and inexpensive toolkit from Ulanzi can be used for this purpose to connect to a hot shoe rack.

The distinctly knurled wheels have the same good friction as previous versions, and the still film transition under the shutter speed wheel has been carried over from the X-T4. I feel the diopter dial is clearer, although this may not be the case, if that’s not a bad thing.

Image quality

For me, the main reason I upgraded from the X-T4 was the 40MP from an APS-C camera. I also took a photo with a Nikon Z 7ii and I love the image quality it delivers so I’d love to see what the X-T5 can do in terms of image quality when it comes to megapixels. I’m not comparing a full frame sensor to a crop frame sensor with that claim, just how well an APS-C sensor can use 40MP. Pixel-shift capture can also be very useful for some of the compositing work I do. I think macro and product photographers will benefit greatly from this in terms of image quality.

Most of the images below are jpgs straight from the camera with only film simulation applied. The town buildings and marram grass are again raw files with only film simulation applied. Bronica’s Pixel Shift Image consists of 20 images stitched together in Fuji’s own way Pixel Shift Combiner software are available for free on their website. Pixel shifting uses the camera’s IBIS to move the image sensor to obtain high-resolution images from a series of 20 raw files. This is more suitable for product or indoor photography than landscapes unless you have a very quiet and still day as any movement can result in slightly blurred pixels. If you use it, remember to turn it off after shooting as it still works in the menu, which I find out next time I shoot with it.

Noise with a sensor of this size can be an issue, so I set up a quick work with a single light source, led stand, some pebbles, book and reflector with hope. I hope I will cover most of the surfaces in this quick work. test. Shooting at f/8 I omitted the exposure compensation gauge for each shot and no correction was applied to the image. I’ll let you judge for yourself.

Video capabilities

The X-T5 is also a very capable camera and can produce 4K 120p, 6.2K 30p, FHD 240p 10-Bit Video. However, I just wanted to focus on that in another article with footage examples to show what it’s capable of.

What I Like

  • Sensor – 40MP APS-C with sensor-shift stabilization.
  • Size – Fits comfortably in my hand thanks to the larger grip. Larger hands may require an additional grip.
  • Weight – This is a comfortable weight for everyday photography and hiking.
  • Focus faster
  • Construction – solid and weathertight.
  • dial operation
  • Three-way tilting LCD

What I don’t like

There’s really nothing I don’t like about this camera when it comes to photography. Selfishly, the lack of a battery grip didn’t affect my photography, so I can’t even say that this is an issue, although it can happen to some people. However, if you need a battery grip, there are other cameras in the range built for that purpose.

Inference

I already own several cameras in the XT, X-T1 series, X-T3and X-T4, and now this and that I’m extremely excited to use. I feel like Fuji is building towards this camera because in my opinion it packs everything you would want from a camera in this price range. It’s not full frame for sure but do you need that with a 40MP sensor, maybe you can, and if so there are plenty of other options out there. As for myself, I’m very pleased with what this camera has to offer in terms of functionality, sensor size and yes, aesthetics as I love the classic silver look.

It’s an easy-to-carry size for everyday photography but small and light enough for hiking. So far I’ve had no issues with anything not working as it should, and yes, it’s still early days but if anything goes wrong with its predecessors I’m pretty confident I’ll continue with it. I haven’t gotten into the studio yet to shoot some portraits but it’s booked for the next few weeks so I’m looking forward to seeing how it goes there.

If you think about upgrading from any of its predecessors, I believe you will be pleasantly surprised. If the mismatched display for selfie video frustrates you but the 40MP sensor appeals, keep in mind that there are low-cost solutions available. In my opinion, the Fujifilm X-T5 is like a supercharged X-T3, and that’s not a bad thing.
