Some helpful tips for beginners about shutter speed

Along with aperture and ISO, shutter speed is one of the three basic parameters that determine the overall exposure and appearance of a photo. Shutter speed has both technical and creative aspects, as you can also leverage it to create effects invisible to the naked eye. If you are new to photography, check out this helpful video tutorial that will give you some helpful tips on choosing a shutter speed.

Coming to you from Mark Duffy, this great video tutorial shares some helpful tips for choosing the right shutter speed. Probably the most important piece of advice I give a beginner photographer regarding shutter speed is not to sacrifice it just for the sake of keeping the ISO low. Many photographers try to use a shutter speed that is too slow in an attempt to keep the ISO value lower to reduce the amount of noise in the image, which often results in blurred photos due to camera shake or subject movement. Keep in mind that there’s a lot modern software can do to reduce noise in an image, but once a photo is blurred due to camera shake or subject movement, there’s not much you can do to save it. Check out the video above for the full rundown from Duffy.
