Stellantis announced early Monday that it plans to build a second battery plant in the United States to help support American electric vehicle production.
With a memorandum of understanding signed between Stellantis and Samsung SDI on Monday, the companies seek to start production at the facility in 2027 and “initial annual production capacity of 34 gigawatt hours.” But the location has yet to be revealed and is “currently under review,” according to a release.
The second battery plant will be part of the same StarPlus Energy joint venture as America’s first facility currently under construction in Kokomo, Indiana and will be deployed in early 2025.
Furthermore, Stellantis reported that the Indiana plant will set an annual production target of 33 gigawatt hours, up from 23 when the project was announced.

Another proposed battery plant by Stellantis, a joint venture with LG Energy Solution, has stalled until earlier this month on issues where “the Canadian government has not followed through on what was agreed upon.”
As of July 5, the companies reported the project was back up and running, with the plant set to begin production in 2024, increasing annual output to more than 45 gigawatt hours.
That 4.5 million square foot plant was previously scheduled for completion by the end of 2023. The site will also serve as a technology hub for developing cells, modules and battery packs for electric, hybrid and hybrid vehicles, but the company has yet to comment on how the delay might affect those plans.

Samsung SDI cells have precedent in Stellantis’ EV US lineup. Original fiat500e first went on limited sale in the United States a decade ago already equipped with cells from that company.
