Sonic the Hedgehog 2 opened in Europe, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand over the weekend, topping the charts and grossing $25.5 million across 31 markets. When compared to the original 2020 film, the sequel’s performance is on track to be 2% higher, and Paramount Pictures is said to be “delighted” with the result.
The film is scheduled to release in the US until next weekend, but has seen strong performance in key regions like the UK ($6.4 million/651 locations), France (5, $7 million/675), Australia ($2.8M/289), Spain ($2.2M/339) and Germany ($2.1M/553). Sweden, Czech Republic, Austria, Norway, Belgium, New Zealand, Slovakia and South Africa also started at number one.
No wonder Paramount was pleased with the performance. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie producer recently talked about creating a Cinematic Universeand it looks like this is already underway with announced not only the third film, but also the live-action series Knuckles. However, whether or not Jim Carrey will reprise his role as Dr. Robotnik is currently on the air, starring the actor. recently stated his intention to retire from acting.
