Smith: Bivol may disappoint Canelo

Former WBA super-middleweight champion Callum Smith believes Dmitry Bivol could sometimes prove to be an uncomfortable proposition for Canelo Alvarez in their WBA light-heavy clash this weekend.

Smith previously faced pound king Canelo at the San Antonio Alamodome in December 2020, with the Mexicans claiming a unanimous decision victory.

Smith is backing his old foe to conquer 175lbs WBA belt holder Dmitry Bivol in Las Vegas on Saturday night, but believes it would be unwise to assume there is only one outcome.

“I think it’s a good fight to be honest,” Smith said Andi Purewal of Boxing Social. “People just assume it’s a Canelo win and talk about what he’s going to do next. Bivol is very good at what he does. He didn’t take the world to the top, he wasn’t excited to watch, but he was undefeated.

“He always does enough and is hard to beat. He’s going to be a tough night for Canelo. I think Canelo beat him, but I think it will be close.

“Bivol did not take advantage of too many opportunities. I think that might disappoint Canelo. I think Canelo wins. However, I’ve seen people think it was an easy night for Canelo, and I don’t believe it.”
