Golden Boy Takes Ryan Garcia, Lupe Valencia To Court
By: Sean Crose
Things are turning chaotic in the kingdom of the man known as “King Ry”. Just weeks after participating in a much-watched and talked-about super match with Gervonta Davis, Ryan Garcia discovered himself and his mentor, Lupe Valencia, being bullied by his promoter, Golden Boy Promotions went to court. According to a lawsuit filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Nevada, Garcia is legally bound to his current contract with Golden Boy and the advertising outlet, run by the Hall of Fame boxer. Oscar De La Hoya is at the top, essentially wanting the court to clarify to Garcia and his team what Garcia can and cannot do.
Recently, things have become less friendly between the boxer and the promoter. First, De La Hoya and Golden Boy partner and fellow Hall of Famer Bernard Hopkins did not appear for the post-match press conference after Garcia was knocked out by Davis in April. After that, Garcia and De La Hoya had a very public war of words on social networks. Then, last week, Team Garcia sent a letter in the manner of Golden Boy claiming Golden Boy was negligent in relation to their own contractual obligations. And now the matter will be settled by the Nevada Court. Never a dull moment.
