If we must fight this war, give us a say in the battle plans

On Wednesday, Ross Gittins wrote an apology to his grandchildren for not fighting the war of our times. He questioned whether politicians promoting the government’s flawed climate policy were quietly relying on not being around long enough to explain their actions to their grandchildren.

Young people will bear the brunt of climate change’s impacts but have also fueled a global movement calling for action from world leaders – our elders. We are the ones who will face worsening inclement weather and should have a say in what our leaders are doing to keep us safe.

It is clear that if we want to make real progress towards a sustainable future, it is time to pass the microphone on to the younger generation.

From the age of 16, young people can drive, work, pay taxes and even join the army. The entire demographic consists of working, contributing citizens who are assigned civic duties but are deprived of one of the most important citizenship rights: the right to vote.

Young people enter politics and give an essential voice. In a world where the climate emergency is such a decisive issue, it is important that the voice of the future be invited to the negotiating table to work toward solutions, rather than handing over everything. something for those who think they might not be here to witness the extreme consequences.

One major life event that most 16-year-olds never experience is paying their own utility bills.

In my opinion, the main reason most people don’t support radical climate action, as many 16-year-olds do, is that responsible adults really want to have enough money to buy food, after paying for it. pay all bills.
