Silver State Will Stand for $20,000

Claiborne Farm introduced Nov. 8 that Silver State  , winner of this year’s Hill ‘N’ Dale Metropolitan Handicap (G1), will stand for $20,000 when he enters stud for the 2022 breeding season.

The 4-year-old son of Hard Spun   earned $1,933,094 on the racetrack and won or placed in 12 of 14 career starts. While multiple graded stakes placed as a 3-year-old, Silver State blossomed as an older horse during his 2021 campaign. Trained by Steve Asmussen, Silver State began this year with four consecutive victories topped by the Metropolitan Handicap and Oaklawn Handicap (G2). He also placed in this year’s Whitney Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course and dropped a slim resolution to Mind Control  in the $300,000 Parx Dirt Mile Stakes.

In the historic Met Mile, Silver State defeated a strong field that included Knicks Go  , eventual winner of this weekend’s Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) and a leading contender for Horse of the Year honors. Silver State raced for the partnership of Winchell Thoroughbreds and Willis Horton Racing.

Bred in Kentucky by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings, Silver State is out of the grade 3-placed stakes-winning Empire Maker mare Supreme, who has produced four winners from five to race. Supreme’s dam, Mon Belle, is a full sister to 2001 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Monarchos.

Winchell Thoroughbreds bought Silver State as a yearling for $450,000 at the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
