Sila claims 20% range increase with silicon-anode battery technology

Battery company Sila Nanotechnologies claims a 20% increase in EV range, as well as faster charging, with its nano-synthetic silicon anode battery technology, branded as Titan Silicon.

The company made that statement in a recent press release, adding that it has “a development roadmap to double that gain in future releases.” Sila also claims their silicon anodes can allow 10-80% charge in 20 minutes, with plans to reduce that time to 10 minutes.

These benefits can be achieved with a safety margin and life cycle comparable to that of existing graphite anodes, Sila claims, while reducing battery weight by up to 15% and increasing space by up to 20%. It can also maintain compatibility with current battery form factors and manufacturing facilities.

The first automotive application for Sila’s battery technology will likely be the Mercedes-Benz EQG, a electric version of the G-Class terrain vehicles. Mercedes validated the technology for the EQG last May, with cells coming from a plant in Washington State using 100% renewable energy. The EQG is due out in 2024, but Sila-derived tiles are expected to be used in a longer range version due later in the decade.

Sila’s closest competitor in the race to commercialize silicon anode battery cells is Group14 Technologies, another US-based company that sees the technology as an avenue for faster charging and thus a a potential. antidote to heavy, expensive battery packs. If electric cars can charge faster, range will become less important, just like with gas cars. The ability to easily find a gas station and refuel quickly means gas drivers rarely think about range.

silicon anode have been the next big thing since about 2018—and unlike some other trends in batteries, little has dampened enthusiasm for them. General Motors is betting on themalso backs developers in the hope that silicon anode technology will provide more efficient batteries.
