Should you also give up Spotify?

There were also a lot of people who left for HD music because high definition music came out on Tidal or Amazon HD and people switched for that reason. And a lot of people were already using Apple Music when it came out. And then again to Apple Music when Apple One, the subscription plan, launches. So if you like arcade games and you want to work out and you want access to iCloud and you want Apple Music, you can get all of that for a lower price—

LG: Bunch of.

MC: Yes, a lower price is included. So it’s not new.

LG: So how it goes, and I’ll share this with both of you, switch from Spotify to another service if you have a lot of playlists in Spotify and you don’t want to lose those that book?

MC: Well, there’s a piece of software you can use, but I’m curious to hear firsthand Kate’s recent personal experience with the conversion.

KK: YES. So I would probably benefit from doing any research before switching because what I did was angrily delete Spotify. I have not used any of those services. I know they exist now, but I just say, “New year, new me. Goodbye playlists.” And I’ve got a lot of playlists that I like. So I’m very sad. I’m trying to recreate them on Apple Music, but I don’t know, maybe it’s… I think it’s a good opportunity to start listening again, let’s see what the new algorithm thinks I’ll like. However, I openly admit that I miss my playlists. If you’re going to make the switch, I suggest you consider moving them over if you like your playlists, because making new points is a pretty positive move, I did.

LG: What if someone shared a playlist with you on Spotify? Like, Mike, I have one of your playlists downloaded to my Spotify, your dinner party playlist.

MC: It’s correct.

LG: And last week, I went to a yoga class, really liked the playlist, then went to the instructor and said, “Hey, what’s that playlist?” And she just airdropped me a Spotify link. Can you transfer those accounts to a new account or do you lose those accounts? Can you just cycle through your own created playlist?

MC: I have no idea.

LG: Huh? We’ll have to keep an eye on that, guys. And thanks for listening to this podcast. Yes, that’s… OK. Please continue.

MC: There are tools that you can use to transfer your own playlists and organize any creations you’ve made in Spotify. You can port it to almost any other major service, not just Apple Music, but also things like Tidal or Cubase, or… I could be wrong, or YouTube Music is a good candidate. Our UK colleague Adam Speight has written a really great guide to converting and specifically on how to carry your playlist. The tool he suggested, the same one that I’ve used a few times, is called SongShift. You download an app, you sign in to the service you’re leaving and the one you’re joining, then you just click a button and it syncs all your preferences and all your saved playlists with another service .
