A few months ago, 2022 Chevy Silverado ZR2 was revealed with a host of off-road features to help it achieve a little more than vans like Ford F-150 Raptor and Ram 1500 TRX. But GM there’s another full-size truck, GMC Sierra, and it would seem silly to us if the company didn’t share those parts. Based on these spy photoLooks like GM agrees.
Although heavily camouflaged, we can tell this truck is a GMC Sierra thanks to the metallic finish on the doors and the distinct shape of the wheel arches. Under the hood, we can see that this Sierra has a very different front bumper than the current king of Sierra off-road models, AT4X. The bottom edge is much higher for better ground clearance, especially on the sides in front of the wheels. This is the same type of change applied to the front end of the Silverado ZR2. It appears to be missing the ZR2’s skid plate, although we suspect that’s a temporary component missing from this prototype. Another off-road upgrade this Sierra equips is a pair of stone rails to protect the fenders on the cabin.
What we can’t see are the shocks installed on this truck. If this were the GMC version of the ZR2, it would have spool valve shocks from Multimatic. They are some of our favorite suspension components on any vehicle. Other components it should have are locking front and rear differentials, 33-inch tires, and a standard 6.2-liter V8.
Since the Silverado ZR2 has been revealed and is production-ready, we expect to see a GMC version soon. A good bet would be the timely reveal for the 2023 model year. As for the name, it’s hard to say, since we already have the AT4 and AT4X. It could be named something entirely separate from the AT4 series.
