Maxwell pig looking for friends

Maxwell and five other piglets came to Animal Place in 2019, when he was just 2 months old. Rescued from a hoard, they are fearful and wary of humans.

As they adjusted to their new life, they began to trust us. This is where Maxwell and his caretaker Liz begin their special friendship.

Their relationship develops when Liz begins to provide him with necessary treatments and nail care. Maxwell will fall down and let her handle his hooves with ease, which is a sign of trust. Liz spent time training Maxwell, who can now sit, turn, and touch objects with his nose! This is a fun form of enrichment and the delicious cheerios he gets for spinning is an added bonus.

Liz describes Maxwell as having similar personality traits to a dog. He greeted her excitedly, leaned against her, fell down to rub her belly, and followed her around the yard. Like dogs, pigs will rely on people they love. It’s their version of a hug! You always know when Liz steps into their pasture because you can hear Maxwell’s excited growl from a mile away. Maxwell and Liz have a friendship that can make anyone smile!

Every employee has at least one animal with whom they have formed a deep relationship. However, when we asked them who the individual was, they all sat for a moment in contemplation. They care a lot about each animal at the sanctuary. Obviously choosing a “favorite” is very difficult.

A special THANK YOU to all of our wonderful carers who cared for and loved the rescued residents so deeply.
