Shawn Porter is one of those rare boxers in the welterweight division who has swapped punches with virtually all of the top names. So, with his one-of-a-kind perspective, Porter became intrigued when he began to hear rumors of a showdown between unified champion Errol Spence Jr. and WBA belt holder Yordenis Ugas.

Initially, Ugas was to defend his welterweight title against Eimantas Stanionis in the framework of a four-man tournament organized by the WBA. But while Stanionis is struggling a bit to claim his first world championship title, he is willing to step aside to allow both Spence Jr and Ugas to unify the title.

On March 9, 2019, Porter successfully defended his WBC welterweight title against Ugas through a split decision. Six months later, Porter would give the aforementioned title to Spence Jr., ironically, also by decision to part ways.

For years, Porter remained unwavering in the belief that if both Spence Jr and Ugas faced each other in the ring, the powerful male god would make a deal with his man. However, after watching Ugas frustrate the apple car by beating Manny Pacquiao earlier this year, Porter is now looking at him in a completely different light.

“I thought Errol won but now I’m curious,” Porter said on The Porter Way Podcast Clips podcast. “At one point, I knew exactly what Yorgenis Ugas was going to do and I can tell you what will happen. Not only did he grow up playing against Manny Pacquiao, but he also learned a few things about himself. ”

Originally, Pacquiao was set to fight Spence Jr. on August 21, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. However, despite showing excitement, Spence Jr was forced to withdraw from their competition due to a torn/separated retina of his left eye, which resulted in subsequent surgery.

Coincidentally, Ugas is also looking for a dance partner. Although he was scheduled to appear on the card in the co-main match against Fabian Maidana, his opponent also suffered an eye injury and withdrew from their competition. As a result, both Ugas and Pacquiao agreed to the terms of a new deal and went head-to-head in the main event.

Ugas, 35, entered the bout with Pacquiao as a significantly underdog. However, despite the betting world doubting his ability, Ugas proved them wrong. The Cuban native who voted in front of the Family Hall got the first vote going forward and brought him into retirement.

When Porter took a close look at Ugas’ skills and his overall resilience, the two-time former world player was fully convinced that he had grown by leaps and bounds since the last time they fought. More importantly, while Porter isn’t ready to fully support Ugas officially, he wouldn’t be surprised if he manages to win.

“I think Yordenis is now at a point where he is about to make whatever adjustments he has to make to beat whoever comes across him. I’m really convinced that he can find a way to beat Errol Spence Jr. I think it was a battle that Errol won but more than anything, I wanted to see what Yordenis Ugas could do. ”
