Several WWE NXT superstars, backstage staff released in early 2022

A new year and a new era for NXT has also resulted in WWE cutting back on new information.

Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful reported some names were released on the Wednesday after NXT 2.0 last night, where Bron Breakker became the NXT Champion by defeating Tommaso Ciampa. WWE has released the following information about the most recent cuts:

“With the continued growth of NXT 2.0, we have decided to part ways with a number of employees based at our Performance Center,” the WWE statement read. “We thank them for their many contributions over the years and wish them all the best.”

One of the first names announced by Fightful was D-Generation X member Brian James, also known as Road Dogg. A multiple-time team champion, Road Dogg has worked behind the scenes with WWE since 2014. He is a producer and writer for SmackDown and began working with talent in NXT in 2019.

Another big name left out is William Regal. A veteran of professional wrestling, Regal became General Manager of NXT in 2014. When NXT 2.0 came out, he no longer held that role, but was still seen in production. Regal is considered one of the most knowledgeable wrestlers in the business. He oversees Performance Center rehearsals and attends independent wrestling shows as a recruiter. Regal’s last ring match was in 2013.

Other personnel that WWE has fired, per PWINsider, which includes coach Ace Steel, writers Ryan Katz and George Carroll (Carroll has worked with MLW and New Japan Pro Wrestling in the past), Dave Kapoor (Ranjin Singh), referees Scott Armstrong and Cathy Corino. Corino, better known as Allison Danger, is a multi-time champion best known for running SHIMMER. She is related to former ECW Heavyweight champion Steve Corino and just started working for WWE a few months ago.

Other talents given away include:

  • Hideki Suzuki of Diamond Mine and Coach at WWE Performance Center
  • Timothy Thatcher, former EVOLVE champion who also served as a coach
  • Danny Burch, former NXT Tag Team champion who also worked as a coach
