Senegal striker Sadio Mané ruled out of the World Cup with a leg injury
Senegal in front of Sadio Mane will miss World Cup because of a leg injury, the Senegal football federation said on Thursday.
Mané was injured in the match in the German league between Bayern Munich and Werder Bremen on November 8th.
“Unfortunately, today’s MRI results show us that progress is not as favorable as we expected,” team doctor Manuel Afonso said on Thursday. “Unfortunately, as a result we pulled Sadio out of the World Cup.”
The Senegal star may also need surgery, Afonso said.
Most of Senegal’s squad traveled to Qatar for the World Cup on Sunday. The team’s first match in Qatar was against Netherlands in Monday.
Senegal, the defending African champions, had hoped that Mané could return at some point in the tournament.
Senegal plays host Cata four days after it faced the Netherlands. Its last match in Group A was against Ecuador on November 29th.
Mané got injured early in the match against Bayern. The Bundesliga club say the two-time Africa Player of the Year has suffered an injury to the tip of the fibula in his right leg.
