Scotland During the Little Ice Age – Fascinated?

NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT

Speaking of glaciers, the BBC report from eight years ago was a bit more balanced:

A glacier has persisted in Scotland for the past 400 years – 11,000 years later than previously thought – it has been suggested.

University of Dundee geographer Dr Martin Kirkbride said a glacier may have existed in Cairngorms as recently as the 18th century.

Britain’s last slow-moving icebergs are thought to have melted 11,500 years ago.

Dr. Kirkbride studied the formation of particles in Cairngorms.

Cabbage is a basin-shaped feature created by mountain ravines.

Using a technique called 10Be cosmic dating, Dr Kirkbride has shown that a small glacier in the Cairngorms corrie has piled up granite boulders to form glacial ridges over the past few centuries, during the cool climate period known as the Little Ice Age.

Dr Kirkbride said: ‘Our laboratory dating indicates that moraines formed over the last few thousand years, which suggests that a glacier in Scotland existed more recently than them. I thought before.

“The climate over the past few millennia has been at its most extreme between 1650 and 1790.

“There are some anecdotes that at that time snow covered some of the peaks all year round. What we have now is scientific evidence that there really is a glacier. “

The University of Dundee says scientists have speculated that glaciers may have re-formed in the Plateau around the time of this Little Ice Age, but elusive evidence has been demonstrated.

Dr Kirkbride collaborated with Dr Jez Everest at the British Geological Survey in Edinburgh, and the Cosmic Isotope Analysis Facility at the University of Scotland Environmental Reactor Center in East Kilbride, to carry out the research. assist.

Dr Everest said: “This is exciting news, as we have demonstrated for the first time that climate conditions in Scotland have allowed for glaciation over the past half-millennium, at a time when glacial regions would have been affected. Other prices, such as Scandinavia, Iceland and the Alps have seen their glaciers. grew to some of their largest sizes since the end of the last Ice Age.

“This is of great importance as we begin to reconstruct climate change in Scotland and the wider region over the past few centuries.”

It was actually known that for a number of years, glaciers reformed in Scotland during the Little Ice Age. In 1982 HH Lamb wrote about this and the much colder climate famine:
