Light snow this morning and Warms up overnight. Also, Strong Winds and Other Risks of Snow….

As expected, some light snowfall this morning…. a layer of dust at most and at most 0.5-1 inch for preferred locations (see below). The roads are warm enough and the air temperature is mild enough for the snow to melt quickly on most road surfaces.

Ironically, snow is linked to warming at high altitudes.

Weather radar this morning around 11 a.m. shows very little rainfall in the area (in blue), with more rain off the coast).

Warm air was flying overhead as displayed by temperature sensors on planes taking off and leaving Seattle. And the surface temperature is being warmed by the (weak) sun. Don’t expect any low-level snow accumulation during the day.

This warm air overhead is leading a warm front over the surface, which will reach the coast around 6 p.m., with the front cooling after a few hours.

So there will be some light streaks in the air today, but nothing significant.

As rainfall picks up on the coast later this afternoon, the higher intensity will reduce snow levels and create some snow around the Olympics (see 3-hour totals ending at 4pm below). : rain is black and gray, snow is colored). Kitsap will be favored as southeasterly currents rise on the eastern slopes. It was raining on the beach at that time.

And then there was a bout of wet snow from Lynnwood to Everett around 10 p.m. as the front moved in and warm air came in (see below). All will melt overnight. And it will seem warm when you wake up tomorrow.

Disappointed? Do you care about hurricane force?

Then go to NW Washington tonight. The approaching front, interacting with the Olympic Mountains, will generate strong southeasterly winds across Northwest Washington (see 7 p.m. gale forecast below).

If you go to Victoria Clipper tonight, bring your sick bag…

Finally, I’m looking at the next interesting situation. By 10 p.m. OTHER Wednesday a center of low pressure will move down the coast to Northwest Oregon, sucking cool air back into the area (see below).

It’s a bit far south to bring snow to Seattle and NW Washington, but Portland and SW Washington can get some white. Will watch it….
