On Tuesday, Samsung said it has verified the 8.5Gigabits per second (Gbps) speed of 14-nanometer (nm) LPDDR5X DRAM on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon platform.

The DRAM used for the test was an 8GB package manufactured using the company’s ultraviolet (EUV) process with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon platform.

Samsung, the world’s largest memory chip maker, emphasizes that it has verified the speed just 5 months after reaching 7.5Gbps.

It’s also 1.3 times faster than the company’s LPDDR5 DRAM, offering a top speed of 6.4Gbps, the South Korean tech giant said.

The higher speeds mean its LPDDR5X DRAM can also be used in applications other than mobile devices, Samsung adds.

Demand for LPDDR DRAM, or low-power dual data rate DRAM, is growing in high-performance computing, automotive, and server applications.

The lower power consumption of these chips is attractive to consumers because they save on the total cost of ownership, Samsung stressed.

The company says it has applied its own proprietary design to improve the input/output signal, which minimizes interference between the memory chip and the processor.

Meanwhile, Samsung’s chip business is expected to report the lowest profit for almost three years for the third quarter.

Earlier this month, the company said it estimated overall operating profit for the quarter fell 31.73% from a year ago, which analysts attributed to falling demand for memory chips.
