Lightweight contender Ryan Garcia is clearly ready to knock even though his return match against Emmanuel Tagoe is still more than a week away in San Antonio.
Garcia (21-0, 18 KOs) hasn’t fought since he got up from a knockdown stop Luke Campbell in seven rounds last January. The social media celebrity 23-year-old has taken the time to take care of his mental health and change coaches. He currently works with Joe Goossen.
The Garcia-Tagoe battle will be live streamed on DAZN.
“Now I’m at the point where I’m going to do the incredible thing in the ring,” he said during Tuesday’s media practice in San Diego. “I did all I could to promote that I could. I will be the best I can be. You have to trust that gut feeling most guys don’t.
“I knew Joe Goossen would be the perfect fit for me. He’s alma mater, and I love that part of the game. He is someone I can contact. We have good chemistry.”
Goossen feels the same way.
“I know he has something special,” said the veteran coach. “We get along and there is something about him that attracts me – his shrewd and fighting personality. He really attacks this as if he is haunted and haunted.
“I’m really impressed.”
Tagoe (32-1, 15 KOs) is a solid opponent. The 33-year-old Ghanaian has fought mainly in his homeland but he has beaten some notable opponents there, including Mzonke Fana and Moses Paulus
And he is about to have a decisive majority victory over Mason Menard in October 2020. That means he will be out of the ring for a longer time than Garcia.
Garcia says he’s prepared for anything Tagoe can throw at him.
“The boxers are always trying to put pressure on me,” he said. “We’ll see because I don’t know too much about this guy. I would just stay calm and surgically break him or knock him down. I have pretty good timing and accuracy. I think that really separates me from the other boxers.
“My strength was revealed more easily. I don’t feel tired either. Everything is coming together. ”
