Russia rejects Ukraine’s call for the removal of the UN Security Council
Russian state news agency TASS reported that the Russian Foreign Ministry rejected Ukraine’s call to remove Russia from the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
On Monday, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry in a statement said that Russia should be excluded from the United Nations Security Council and its membership in the United Nations in general. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for Russia’s expulsion from the United Nations in the past.
Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for Russia’s Foreign Ministry, denied Kyiv’s claim on Wednesday, saying: “Doesn’t do. This is exactly a case of dogs barking but the caravan goes on.”
Zakharova made comments on Sputnik radio on Wednesday in response to a question about Moscow’s response.
Here are some background: Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry accused “a flagrant violation of the norms and principles of international law as well as crimes committed on the territory of Ukraine, in particular war crimes and crimes against humanity, as well as genocide”.
It suggested that Russia could be re-admitted on the recommendation of membership of the United Nations after it “meets the conditions for membership of the Organization”.
