Rumiko Takahashi’s Urusei Yatsura Gets 2022 Anime Remake

Rumiko Takahashi, creator Inuyasha and Ranma 1/2, is giving fans a new look at her roots. A new anime based on her first manga, Urusei Yatsura, is in production for launch in 2022. The announcement was made on January 1, 2022, through the program New website opened and social media accounts.

The official accounts have also revealed the first trailer for Urusei Yatsura.

The short clip has the same voiceovers as the 1981 original Urusei Yatsura cartoon series. The clips feature the voice of Ataru, the main character, calling Lum, an alien princess. The clip was then enlarged to show Lum, the film’s heroine, wearing her signature tiger print bikini.

First published in 1978, Urusei Yatsura is a romantic comedy. In it, a boy named Ataru Moroboshi must compete for the future of Earth when the alien race “Oni” invade. After accidentally winning the contest, Ataru’s rival, Princess Lum, falls in love with him and moves into his house. Hijinks happen with various factors such as Lum’s suitors, alien forces, and Ataru’s perverted and uninteresting nature conspiring to keep the pair apart.

The first Urusei Yatsura anime premiered in 1981 and lasted until 1986. Its first director was the now famous Mamoru Oshii, the director of the first film. David Production will be animating the series in 2022. This is the studio responsible for the recent work JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure cartoon series and Cells at work!. The show is expected to run for four seasons, or four seasons over the course of a year. However, seasons may have gaps between airing dates. In addition, new voice actors will take on the roles of Ataru and Lum. Hiroshi Kamiya (Levi in Attack the giant, Koyomi in Monogatari series) will voice Atrau. Lum will be voiced by Sumire Uesaka (Nagatoro in Don’t toy with me, Miss Nagatoro, and Anastasia in Idolmaster Cinderella Girls).

Urusei Yatsura will air in Japan in 2022. Viz Media published the original manga in English, while Discotek Media licensed the film. AnimEigo and Central Park Media released the original animated series for home video in North America, although the license has expired.
