Ruben Bolling Takes Berryman Award

Ruben Bolling, creator of the “Tom the Dancing Bug” satirical weekly cartoon strip, has gained the 2021 Clifford Ok. and James T. Berryman Award for Editorial Cartoons from the Nationwide Press Basis.

The judges cited Bolling’s mordant wit, superior art work and creative supply. The cartoonist parodies well-known American cultural memes, from Charles M. Schultz’s Peanuts to Richard Scarry’s kids’s books to The Matrix.

His 2021 work included biting commentary on the U.S. response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol, and the Q-ANON conspiracy concept.

The Nationwide Press Basis introduced the awarding here and here.

Ruben sends his thanks:

Hey, Tom the Dancing Bug simply gained the Berryman Award from the Nationwide Press Basis!

I’ll be touring to Washington, DC on February 9 to just accept the award at a gala dinner. I hope there are tacos!

I’m actually honored, and I do know I’m repeating myself, however I don’t care:  Anytime I’m given any honor I solely need it to mirror on the folks and entities who companion with and help me and Tom the Dancing Bug:

  • My net purchasers, BoingBoing.net, DailyKos.com, and GoComics.com, who’ve all the time proven nice religion within the cartoon, and have introduced it their nice and extremely enthusiastic audiences;
  • Andrews McMeel Syndication, who has been a valued companion and nice buddy for nearly 25 (!) years, and all of Tom the Dancing Bug valued print purchasers; and
  • The Inner Hive, the workforce that each single week makes the very existence of Tom the Dancing Bug doable, and way more enjoyable.

Anyway, my due to the Nationwide Press Basis.  I’m grateful to the judges for locating one thing worthy in my comics, and for locating that cartooning on the whole is worthy, apparently a view that’s not universally shared amongst judges of cartooning awards.
