This column highlights the performance of young women who have had no more than five starts and sold for more than $500,000 in public auction, have a sibling who is a grade/group winner, or has grade/group level winners. Monmouth
Roseland Farm Stable’s The Classy One won her first on September 11, taking the six-feathered maiden test for 2-year-old, mixed-breed New Jersey at Monmouth Park for coach Kelly Breen.
Daughter of Temple City run right behind the leader in half a mile timed: 46.11. Jockey Paco Lopez led the ball for The Classy One three points wide, vying for the lead and dominating the upper half to shoot 4 1/2 lengths into the finish. The final time of the run was 1:12.69 on the fast track.
Bred by John Bowers Jr., The Classy One is not a 3rd prize winning Smart N Classy mare. Classy One is the all 3rd grade winning sister. Valedictorian and a half-sister to bet on the winner He’spregold , who race for the same connections. All seven Smart N Classy children who entered the race won.
Earlier in the week, Roseland Farm Stable, Breen and Lopez won with Man driving a steel car who swam back to win 1/4 of the length while going 5 1/2 in a state-bred 2-year-old girl race.
The Tonalist colt finished third in the August 13 debut against the same track with six hoops.
During Monday’s race, Lopez instructed the pony to stand up to press the lead, and after a quarter mile with a record of: 22.63, the Steel Drivin Man edged ahead to reach the half mile with: 46.81 and went home in 1:06.64 on the fast track.
Also bred by Bowers, the Steel Drivin Man is not the mare born of the King of Kings, who also produced Level 3 winner Pickin’ Time (Thirsty ) and the winner of the Royal Urn bet (Kantharos ).
Pimlico
Same day at Racecourse Pimlico marks first wins for Crown’s Way Racing, NBS Stable, Eduard Dalava and Eli Diamant’s Otago . Florida’s half-blood son Sightstown won the off-court version of the 2-year-old’s 1/16-mile women’s race while sloppy with coach Kelsey Danner.
Otago, ridden by Dylan Davis, leads from the gate, setting the odds: 24.95, :50.74 and 1:15.92 through six stretches before extending his lead in the segment way to win 4 1/4 length in the final time of 1:48.44.
During his debut on August 22 at Colony Downs, Otago finished third. Bred by Courtney Meagher and Speightstown Syndicate, Otago is not part of War Chant mare Mom’s Vice, 3rd grader’s dam Mom’s On Strike (via First Prince ).
Delaware
P. Dale Ladner Alva Starr her first win for coach Brett Brinkman on Wednesday at Delaware Parktake a special six-hairy maiden weight for a 2-year-old filling.
Removed by Charlie Marquez, Alva Starr exited the last of the six gates, but made her way to the third and then fourth when a quarter mile had entered: 23.28 and a half entered: 47 ,49. Lord Nelson surreptitiously followed the lead into the first leg and split opponents when asked to go, driving home in 1:11.85 on a sloppy track to win 2 3/4 the length.
Bred by Brinkman and Ladner, Alva Starr is not part of the Into Mischief mare Sittin at the Bar who is also the dam of class 2 winners and top of class 1 Cilla (California Chrome ).
