Rory McIlroy says he’d rather retire and just play in the major championships than play for LIV Golf

Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods’ proposal to own LIV Golf teams appeared in a Senate hearing on Tuesday regarding the PGA Tour and the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund’s agreement to host commercial operations. under a new for-profit organization called PGA Tour Enterprises.

Although the condition was not included in the final bracket agreement, McIlroy, who was a heavyweight opponent of LIV Golf, is no less. After scoring 6 under 64 in the first round of the 2023 Scottish Open, the four-time major champion spoke briefly about the prospect.

McIlroy said: “If LIV Golf is the last place to play golf on earth I will retire, that’s how I feel about it. “I’ll play majors, but I’ll be pretty relaxed.”

Despite the two sides’ growing closer together, McIlroy has consistently shown disdain for LIV Golf, the golf tournament sponsored by PIF. The proposal also includes McIlroy and Woods competing in 10 LIV Golf events, one “World Golf Series” ending in Saudi Arabia, and at least two PGA Tour celebrity events sponsored by Aramco and/or PIF, with one of these events being held in Saudi Arabia.

These items were removed from the final framework agreement, but it is unknown if any variations of these terms are still under consideration as the PGA Tour and PIF negotiate the details of the agreement. PIF plans to become a minority investor in the PGA Tour Enterprise and provide an inflow of capital into the new organization. PGA Tour CEO Ron Price estimated the investment “about $1 billion” from the PIF during a July 11 hearing in the Senate.

“I still hate LIV,” McIlroy said ahead of the Canadian Open. “Like, I hate LIV. I hope it goes away and I totally expect it to. I think that’s the difference here. This is the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and PIF — very different from the other. LIV.”
