Robert Epstein warns against big tech manipulation

Google has the power to manipulate what you see online, targeting you with certain ads and burying search results they don’t want you to see. But can they go so far as to control the outcome of political elections? Absolutely true, according to Dr. Robert Epstein, a senior research psychologist at the American Institute of Behavioral Research and Technology (AIBRT).

Epstein, a Harvard-trained psychologist who founded the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Research, likens Google to a dictator with unprecedented power because it relies on unprecedented manipulation techniques. in human history. The free services they offer are actually not free, he warned. “You pay for your freedom.”first

Google Uses Ephemeral Manipulation Tools

In the video above, Epstein talks to Jan Jekielek, Epoch Times senior editor, about Google’s ability to control public policy, rotate elections, and brainwash our children. Google reserves the right to “censor content, track our every move, divide society, alter human minds, and even restructure humanity,” Epstein wrote in his report, “The Threat triple threat of Google”2 which he details in an interview with Jekielek.

The methods Google uses are ephemeral and leave no trace on paper, making it difficult to track and prove that they are using humans as pawns, manipulating us in ways that they do. We cannot resist. Ephemeral experiences happen briefly, then disappear, and include things like lists of recommended YouTube videos, search suggestions, and topics in the news feed.

“They affect us, they disappear, they don’t store anywhere and they disappear,” says Epstein. “It is the ideal form of manipulation. People don’t know they are being manipulated, number one and number two, the authorities cannot go back in time to see what people are being shown, or in other words, how they have been manipulated . ”3

However, Epstein and his team have found a way to track Google’s invisible, near-superhuman tools, including the search engine manipulation effect (SEME). According to Epstein:4

“SEME is one of the most powerful forms of influence ever discovered in behavioral science… It makes people think they’ve made their own decisions, which is very delusional. It also leaves no trace of paperwork for the authorities to track down. Worse still, very few people can detect bias in search results even further in the direction of bias, so just being able to see the bias doesn’t protect you from it. . “

Research by Epstein and colleagues has found that biased search results can change people’s opinions and voting preferences, altering the opinions of undecided voters. between 20% and 80% in certain demographic groups.5 Leaked internal emails from Google talk about “temporary experiences,” and the company makes a point of designing transient experiences that aim to change the way people think.

However, SEME is just one of about a dozen superhuman tools that Epstein’s team has discovered. Others include the “search suggestion effect”, the “opinion matching effect” and the “YouTube manipulation effect”.6

Google has attracted millions of votes in 2020

As Epstein and his team began perpetuating ephemeral experiences involving politics, extreme political bias was exposed on Google and YouTube, owned by Google’s parent company Alphabet.

For instance, in the days leading up to the 2020 Presidential election and the 2021 Senate election in Georgia, they hosted 1.5 million ephemeral experiences and more than 3 million web pages, enough to change “little at least 6 million votes in the presidential election without people even knowing.”7

This is not an isolated incident. In 2016, Google’s search algorithm generated biased search results that affected undecided voters, giving Hillary Clinton between 2.6 million and 10.2 million votes.

Epstein made it clear that he leans to the left politically, but despite Google’s bias in working to support the candidates he supports, he can’t welcome it, “because of the serious research The rigorous I’ve been doing since 2013 has shown me how dangerous these companies are – Google-and-the-Gang, I call them. ”8

Epstein found that even displaying a “Go Vote” prompt on Google on election day in 2018 gave one political party 800,000 to 4.6 million more votes than the other party received. . What’s more, Epstein says those numbers are “quite conservative.”9 “In other words,” Epstein explained, “Google’s ‘Go Vote’ prompt is not a public service; it’s a vote manipulation. This type of vote manipulation is an example of what I call the ‘Difference Demographic Effect’. ”ten

Epstein also had a surveillance system in place in 2018 that kept more than 47,000 election-related searches on Google, Bing and Yahoo, along with nearly 400,000 websites to which the search results were linked. The political bias detected in the results could have moved 78.2 million votes to a political party.11

Even the “autocomplete” feature that appears when you start typing in the Google search engine is a powerful tool. “There is growing evidence that Google is manipulating people’s thoughts and behaviors from the first letter people type into the search box,” Epstein wrote.twelfth From this feature alone, Epstein’s research shows that Google can turn a 50/50 ratio among undecided voters into an almost 90/10 ratio – all without people realizing they’re being manipulated. needy.

Furthermore, because Google’s persuasion technologies are so powerful and many elections around the world are so close, Epstein’s data suggests that Google likely determined the results of up to 25% of the polls. National elections worldwide since at least 2015.13

Google is a watchdog

It is important to understand that Google is a watchdog with hidden but significant surveillance powers and this is one of their main threats to society. As noted by Epstein:14

“Search engines… Google Wallet, Google Docs, Google Drive, YouTube, these are surveillance platforms. In other words, from their point of view, the value of these tools is to provide them with a lot of information. more about you. Surveillance is what they do.”

While surveillance is Google’s main business, its revenue — in excess of $130 billion a year — comes almost exclusively from advertising. All the personal information that you have provided to them through their various products will be sold to advertisers looking for a specific target audience. Meanwhile, they also have unprecedented censorship capabilities. By restricting or blocking access to websites, they decide what you can and cannot see.

The biggest problem with internet censorship is that you don’t know what you don’t know. If a certain type of information is removed from search, and you don’t know it will exist somewhere, you will never know and you will not be looking for it. This is how hundreds of millions of people have been deprived of learning the power of natural cures from me and many other Google-censored clinicians.

For example, Google has been investing in DNA archives for a long time and adds DNA information to our records. According to Epstein, Google took over the national DNA archive, but the articles about that – which he cited in his articles – have all disappeared. As it stands, Epstein is worried for the future if no one stands to stop Google’s power:15

“As a father of five, I am especially worried about what the future of humanity will look like if Big Tech is allowed to continue unhindered on its path to world domination. In the 1950s, the British economist Kenneth Boulding wrote, ‘A general invisible dictatorship is still conceivable, still using democratic forms of government.’

I am writing this essay because I believe such a world already exists, and that unless we act quickly and decisively, the power that tech company executives wield will become unwavering. so sure that we will never be able to separate them from their invisibility. throne. ”

Epstein’s Top Six Security Tips

The first step out of the Google dictatorship is to realize that manipulation is happening. Next involves consciously opting out as much as possible. It is especially important that children be protected, as they are among the most vulnerable to the onslaught of manipulative behavior, which has dire consequences for future generations. future. Epstein notes:16

“We’re trying to figure out how manipulation works. But most importantly, we’re trying to quantify it… Because I think what’s really happening is that there’s a cumulative effect, not just of political bias, but of literal value. cumulative effect of exposure to certain types of value, and over and over, on one technology platform or another.

And I think the people most vulnerable to that process are children.”

Epstein has compiled six steps that can help protect your privacy online, noting that as a result, he hasn’t received a targeted ad on his computer or mobile phone since. from 2014. To regain some of your privacy online, for yourself as well as your children, he recommends:17

first. Exit Gmail. If you have a Gmail account, try a non-Google email service, such as ProtonMail, an encrypted email service based in Switzerland.

2. Uninstall Google Chrome and use the Brave browser instead, available for all computers and mobile devices. It blocks ads and protects your privacy.

3. Switch search engines. Try the Brave search engine instead, which you can access on the Brave browser and won’t compromise your privacy or survey you.

4. Avoid Android. Google phones and Android phones track virtually everything you do and don’t protect your privacy. It is possible to de-Google your mobile phone by getting an Android phone without Google operating system, but you will need to find a skilled IT person who can reformat your mobile phone’s hard drive. friend.

5. Avoid Google Home devices. If you have a Google Home smart speaker or a smartphone app with Google Assistant, chances are people are listening to your requests and maybe even listening when you don’t expect it.

6. Consider using a proxy or a VPN (Virtual Private Network). The service creates a buffer between you and the internet, “tricking many surveillance companies into thinking you’re not really you”.
