The Racing Officials Recognition Program is currently accepting nominations for the 2022 Pete Pedersen Awards that will be awarded to managers who have served the sport of horse racing with excellence.
Named in honor of longtime distinguished manager and renowned journalist, Pete Pedersen, the Pedersen Awards presentation will be held in conjunction with the Annual Circuit Program’s Global Symposium on Racing. of the University of Arizona in December in Tucson, Ariz.
Pedersen worked as a manager in California for 50 years before retiring at the age of 85 in 2005. The Seattle native became the second manager to receive the Eclipse Award in 2002 and was awarded the Laffit Pincay Jr. in 2008 for serving the racing industry with integrity, dedication, determination, and distinction. Pedersen has worked at most racetracks on the West Coast, and his reputation for objectivity and kindness is widely known in the racing industry and beyond.
Criteria used to determine award recipients include time served as a manager, exceptional contributions as a manager, participation in industry initiatives, participate in public education programs, management advisors and racing officials and participate in educational programs for management and racing officials.
The purpose is to recognize managers who have excelled in their responsibilities in racing regulation but who have also contributed to the industry.
Anyone can nominate current or retired managers for the award. A special selection committee from the ROAP affiliated organizations will determine the recipient(s). Nominations will take place on October 15.
