Rivian shows off R1T’s off-road and off-road capabilities with a difference in driving modes


Rivian on Monday released a video showing off its R1T electric pickup truck both on road and off-road, as well as detailing the truck’s driving modes.

The R1T includes eight modes — four on-road and four off-road — that change ride height, suspension stiffness, accelerator pedal response, and four-wheel-drive operation. gear for different rider conditions and preferences.

Aiming for on-road performance, the Sport reduces the ride height to a minimum, stiffening the suspension and sending most of the power to the rear wheels. It also assists with stability control so the driver can go sideways a bit, if they want to.

On a similar note, the Off-Road Drift mode is designed to slide on dirt roads. It turns off stability control and once again sends more power to the rear wheels and keeps the suspension stiff. However, it also raises the travel height to the standard setting and increases regenerative braking.

Off-Road Rally mode is basically a less extreme version of Drift mode. It keeps stability control partially engaged to allow for some sideways action without having to leave the rider fully in their gear.

Rivian also includes an Auto Terrain mode that increases cruise height to a maximum of 13.5 inches, with soft suspension, standard regenerative braking, and more or less distributing power between the wheels. Terrain Rock Crawl mode is also included for climbing over rocks. The main difference between the Auto and the Rock Crawl is the stiffer suspension setting of the latter.

All Purpose mode is as the name suggests. Aimed at everyday driving, it includes standard settings for stroke height and regenerative braking, soft damping and an even front/rear torque split.

Efficiency-focused Conservation mode switches the R1T to front-wheel drive, maximizing regenerative braking and reducing ride height. Finally, the Towing mode includes standard ride height settings, stiff suspension, and regenerative braking at the highest level.

R1T is one of the leading introduction to EV of last year and was the first to focus on the off-road crowd. As we reported in a first driveit delivers off-road capability unmatched in internal combustion models — largely due to the dexterity enabled by these EVs’ ability to drive four engines.
