The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta Usually not the first compact sedan on our mind when analyzing past best in the segment, but it is still one of the things you should keep in mind. Its powertrain delivers a lot of punch, and there’s a lot to love for those wanting a manual transmission, as you can get it in three different Jetta trims. What’s new for 2022?

The Jetta and GLI was treated mid-cycle refresh for 2022. That update brought updated styling, more safety features and power to the regular Jetta, as well as improved trim. The new grille, new bumper, new LED lights and taillights accentuate the exterior changes. Inside, VW gives all Jettas an all-digital instrument cluster previously found on higher trim levels, a new steering wheel and touch-sensitive buttons for the infotainment system.

VW has upgraded the base powertrain to a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder from Tao. It offers more horsepower and greater efficiency than the old engine.

What is the interior and technology of the Jetta car like?

Jetta’s interior is classic Volkswagen. It’s simple and easy to use, has a professional interface, and is built for the cost. You won’t find the oomph or luxury of Mazda3nor her charismatic style civic, but there is little to offend inside Jetta. It does not have the interior of the new GTI, that’s a plus in our book. Things get a little nicer in the GLI thanks to upgraded seat covers, tight sport seats and a sport steering wheel.

The standard touch screen has a size of 6.5 inches, which is small but enough to compete with other base sedans. Upgrading to the 8-inch screen increases functionality significantly, but both are easy enough to use. The standard wireless Apple CarPlay is well integrated (wireless Android Auto is also included) and the tactile controls are really easy to use. We like the inclusion of a physical volume knob and that all other controls are simple and nicely laid out.

How is the interior and technology in the car of the Jetta GLI?

How big is the Jetta?

The Jetta is a big “compact” car on the outside and one of the biggest on the inside. Rear-seat legroom is generous, and the rear-facing child seats fit comfortably, making the Jetta a good choice for families on a tighter budget (or just practical people even doesn’t need the extra space from increasingly huge midsize cars). Its 14.1 cubic foot trunk is also wide and deep, though not quite as large as what you get in Kia Forte or Honda Civic. Honda’s Compact sedans and hatchbacks also match the Jetta’s rear-seat space on paper, but the VW’s higher-mounted seats mean you’ll likely be more comfortable.

All of this also applies to the GLI, making it an even bigger performance bargain. It doesn’t feel as compact or maneuverable as GTI or one Honda Civic Sibut it is not a noticeable difference.

What are the Jetta’s fuel economy and performance specs?

Volkswagen Jetta 2022 is equipped as standard with a 1.5-liter turbocharged in-line 4-cylinder engine. Its 158 horsepower is typical for the segment, but the 184 pound-feet of torque it sends to the front wheels is larger. A six-speed manual transmission is standard on the S and Sport trim levels. An eight-speed automatic is standard on all others. Fuel economy for the manual is rated at 29 mpg in the city, 43 mpg on the highway, and 34 mpg combined. A base automatic is rated for 31/41/35 mpg, but step up to the SE or SEL version, and those numbers drop to 29/40/33 mpg.

The Jetta GLI takes things up a notch with a production 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired with a six-speed manual transmission or VW’s seven-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission. An electronic locking front differential has also been added. Fuel economy is excellent at 26 mpg city, 37 mpg highway and 30 mpg combined with the manual. Automatically reduces the highway figure to 36 mpg.

What does Jetta like to drive?

The regular Jetta is a forgettable car, but not annoying to drive. The ride is comfortable through most minor bumps and road imperfections, but on large bumps like railroad crossings it can crash, landing with a loud thud followed by slightly hovering when returning to its natural state. Some more elaborate shock absorbers will do it just fine. It’s also not a particularly great processor – going to the torsion beam rear suspension for this new generation doesn’t do it any favors. The steering wheel, in typical VW fashion, is numb in the center and feels very artificial. Similarly, throttle response and action is best described as “lethargic mess”. The 1.5-liter turbocharged engine to which it is connected is at least powerful around town and enough to blend into the highway.

What does the Jetta GLI like to drive?

Things get much better with the Jetta GLI. The rear suspension is a more advanced independent multi-link setup that’s better suited for prepared cornering, and while the adjustment is a bit softer than the GTI’s with roll and higher, it really encourages improved stability on rough roads. Better still, the GLI comes with adaptive dampers. The sport mode is pretty solid, while the normal mode offers a better balance between controllability and comfort.

The GLI’s steering is fundamentally better – more effortful but consistent with enough feedback. However, it still has a bit of an artificial feel and can impart a more road feel. Other upgrades include an electronic locking differential that expertly shuts off the power so the GLI booms around corners in a friendly and helpful manner. We are also very impressed by it brake under heavy use and no throttle complaints either.

The Volkswagen Jetta 2022 is available in S, Sport, SE and SEL trim levels. The 2022 GLI is only available in the top-end Autobahn trim level.

What are the Jetta’s safety ratings and driver assistance features?
