Review: RPGolf Legends win over genre fusion

Golf RPG fan? We’ve been going through a tough time lately. Recently Mario plays golf item has delivery failure depth of gems in Game Boy. Sequel to indie hit Golf Story, Sports story? We hear it’s on the way, but not as fast as fans would like. So if you like this particular combination, you might be looking for a stop.

Also RPGolf Legends what are you wanting?

The answer is somewhat complicated. Sure, it’s a golf RPG. It even kicks you out of your house with two books that explain what golf and RPG are all about. But the balance between the two? It’s different from what you usually play. For one, it wasn’t always an RPG with golf mechanics. Most of your playtime is a more traditional action RPG, fighting and dodging enemies with attacks that happen using only golf clubs.

A lot of you are interested in RPGolf Legends will depend on your tolerance to grow on a low budget. Legendary It’s actually the second game in the franchise, so there are more reviews here than you’d expect in this iteration attempt! But that first release was a mobile game and Legendary is the developer’s effort to extend it into a console-quality title.

That budget feel is really starting to take its toll on you when it comes to the mechanics of each mode. The games of golf depend a lot on their handling, as well as the nuances of the courses themselves. RPGolf Legends use a quick, two part meter, and it’s actually pretty forgiving. Instead of any kind of traditional golf setting, it needs Golf Story and just aim from a top-down perspective like the rest of the game. And the holes? They are flat and hill-free and challenge for the best golf titles. It works fine, but it doesn’t really appeal to you.

Similarly, the action role-playing part? It’s pretty generic. You just stick and move, with a charged attack that you can change as the game progresses. It wants to feel like a Mana’s Secret setup, with carefully timed strikes instead of just spamming the attack node. You can largely avoid enemies when you really want to, but fetching quests and crafting resources leaves you searching for fights against specific enemies. Again, it works! And it’s one of those things. If one of you actually interacts, the other is a lot more forgiving.

Write in RPGolf Legends is extremely important. Your travel companion, a magical golf club, will do many things for you. And it’s about how it’s a game and you have gauges and inventory. Immersion is not the goal here. To be fair, does it work? Where you always know what you need to do. RPGs can get confusing with systems and missions, but the combination of the compass pointing you to your next goal and the golf club just telling you everything will be clearer. The result isn’t much of a challenge, but that’s what it happens to be.

Visually, the developer ArticNet handled everything well. Small team RPGs often feel cheap and disjointed visually, but the style here is coherence. It’s reminiscent of Stardew Valley, bridging the gap between old-fashioned pixel art and more modern approaches to text boxes and interfaces.

Final, RPGolf Legends might be an appropriate distraction for those who have been waiting so long for a game like Sports story. It’s pleasant and largely non-obtrusive, a stop for those who need it. If ArticNet continues to work on the franchise, we’d really like to see a focus on mechanical depth in the sequel.
