Renault Australia interested in classic electric hatchback

Renault Australia says it’s interested in selling electric 5 hatchbackbut a local launch for the compact EV is yet to be confirmed.

“We will take it if they drive on the right, we raise our hands. Then, will they invest more to design the car for [Australian Design Rules] in Australia?” said Renault Australia boss Glen Sealey.

“The reality is, let’s say it costs you three million euros to design that car for Australia, or spend that money on a different specification for that car in Europe will give them a better profit, because So it’s about allocating resources in the end.”

If approved by headquarters, it may not launch until 2025. It will enter production in France in 2024, after being first revealed in concept form in 2021.

It will use a new electric motor called ‘ePT-100kW’, related to the ePT-160kW motor from the larger motor. Megane Electronic Technologywith a 200 kW motor will enter production by the end of the decade.

The synchronous motor with a wound-rotor – and expected to be free of rare earth materials – as the name implies, will produce 100kW of power.

Under the hood, we know that the Renault 5 will use the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance’s CMF-BEV electric platform.

The CMF-BEV platform shares bits with the CMF-B platform as the basis for Renault Captur And Nissan Jukeand promises to reduce the price of new electric vehicles by 1/3.

The exaggerated design of the production version of the Renault 5 EV concept is inspired by the 1972 original with the hatchback’s silhouette, distinctive taillights and carried over window surrounds.

Renault has yet to confirm details on the battery sizes of the five electric hatchbacks and the announced range.

However, it is understood that the battery will have nickel-manganese-cobalt chemistry (NMC) and the CMF-BEV platform will offer a range of up to 400 km according to the WLTP test.

a new one NissanMicra The city tram will also be based on the underpinnings of the Renault 5, as well as a high-performance Alpine version.

Both of these upcoming electric vehicles (EVs) have been revealed, with the Nissan Micra looking bouncy and cute, and the Alpine Renault 5 EV featuring a large rear spoiler and position lights at the front.

The classic Renault revolution won’t end with the upcoming 5. The brand’s electric rollout will include a Renault 4-inspired SUV, previewed with Concept 4Ever Trophy 2022.

A production version of this will launch in 2025.

Renault has offered a small electric hatchback in Australia before with the Zoe, but it’s far from a hit – in stark contrast to its considerably more aggressive performance in Europe.

The French marque only sold 132 units between 2017 and 2020 – when it stopped making the model – canceling plans to bring a mid-life update to Down Under.

“With such limited numbers, it’s hard to tell head office – especially when they sell over 10,000 units a month. [overseas],” said Renault Australia senior product manager Charly Clercin at the time.
