When Porsche first invited journalists to drive the 992-generation GT3 RS, the automaker scheduled a launch event at the Silverstone Circuit in rural England, a track that allows the RS’s aeronautical capabilities to shine. Unfortunately, the only tracking time available is in late October, and it turns out, England gets a little rainy in the fall.

Prior to this Porsche event, my total time spent watching at Thermal was limited to a round seen a few years ago with The late Jeff Rodriguez, was the race manager at the time and was one of my first instructors at Skip Barber decades ago. I need to run a few laps to get used to the runway. Pat Long, who led me everywhere in not RS 992 GT3obviously disagree, quickly disappear into the distance and expect me to match his speed. (Side note: Oha good day, I’ll struggle to keep up with Pat’s pace, so his thinking is a bit… optimistic.)

The great thing about having Pat in the lead in GT3 is that I can use him as a rabbit, judging my speed into the corners, shortened my learning curve on both car and monitor. This isn’t to say Pat is at a disadvantage – the non-RS GT3 is a great machine no matter where you’re driving it. But the addition of the RS package, with its fully active aerodynamics, gives you a 911 that produces downforce numbers second only to Porsche’s Le Mans GTE race car. While the regular GT3 produces a bit of downforce, the RS is a different animal.
