QB Head Patrick Mahomes is the return king of the NFL

LIKE Wednesday a quarter passed on Sunday night, it looks like coaches Andy Reid and Chief of Kansas City can lose Tennessee Titans.

The captain started the second half with a 9-0 lead, but had to stretch it to halftime.

Kansas City’s defense gave up consecutive touches to let the Titans run back Derrick Henry. The main kicker Harrison Butker missed a goal on the field 47 yards, as well as an extra point. Head Midfielder Patrick Mahomes even threw an intercept.

But then, Mahomes solved his own problem, rushing to make a touch and convert to 2 points to equalize the score. In the end, Butker redeemed himself with the winning goal in extra time to stamp the return.

It was the Chiefs’ fifth win in a row, trailing behind at halftime.

The captain was just eight points behind on Sunday night, but Mahomes is no stranger to taking the lead by double-digit points.

Since Mahomes became captain starting in 2018, the Captain has been aged 13-9 – including the post-season period – in games where they have led by at least 10 points. Mahomes’ 59.0 win rate in such games is the all-time #1. No other quarterback in NFL history has a winning record (Tim Tebow, in 5-6th, is second). Among active midfielders with at least five career starts, brave cat (39-65, 37.5%) and Russell Wilson (16-37, 30.2%), second and third behind Mahomes, didn’t even come close.

Through eight games this season, Mahomes has led three comebacks with 10 or more points to beat Los Angeles charger, Las Vegas Raiders and San Francisco 49ers.

“The person behind the center always gives us a chance,” said offensive team leader Eric Bieniemy. [that of] many people. He’s a guy who’s always looking for an edge to improve, to get better, just to understand exactly what he’s seeing and how he can help exploit some points that need to be exploited. “

THAT IS Second Sunday in January and Arrowhead Stadium, known for its boisterous, silent crowds.

Mahomes and the chiefs watched Houston Texas 24-0 in the second quarter of the 2019 division round. They have never crossed such a deficit in the history of the franchise.

Sammy Watkinswas then a broad receiver with the Chiefs, saying he thought his season was over.

That’s when Mahomes rallied his offensive teammates around him on the sidelines and prepared them for what was to come. He told them they were about to be part of something special.

“I said, ‘Okay, he knows something that I don’t,'” Watkins said.

The captains took the lead at halftime.

Mahomes made four touchdown passes in a row – including three to the end of the game Travis Kelce – 28-24 lead. They won 51-31.

The Texans made a fateful decision in the second quarter that kept Kansas City back. Leading 24-7, they tried to fake from their own 31-yard pitching formation.

The fake shot failed and the Captain needed three plays to score another touchdown and cut the deficit to 24-14. Bill O’Brien, then the Texans coach, admitted the decision was made out of Mahomes intimidation and the Captain’s offense.

“I don’t think any lead is safe compared to these guys and that’s why we feel like we need 50 points,” O’Brien said. “We weren’t able to do that.”

Safety Justin Reid, now in his first season with the Chiefs, played for Texas that day. He said the feeling along the Houston fringes was one of hopelessness as the Chiefs began to pile up.

“It’s the way you feel, especially when you’re in [Arrowhead Stadium]” Justin Reid said. “That stadium, that atmosphere, it’s crazy. It’s one of the loudest places you’ll ever play. As an opponent, it feels like everything is pouring down on you and at that point it’s hard. to stop.

“We were trying to find a way to stop the bleeding.”

The captain won the Super Bowl for the first time in 50 years, but not before trailing by at least 10 points in every one of their postseason games that season, including Super Bowl LIV. They won the AFC championship game against the Titans despite falling 10 points behind at two different points in the game.

Mahomes’ ability to return was one reason the Chiefs traded in the 2017 draft to buy him and then traded veteran Alex Smith the following year to make room for Mahomes as a starter. .

“It starts with Pat,” says Reid, “There’s nothing to panic about if you fall behind. You don’t want to be in the back, but if you’re there, he won’t panic, which sends a message to the others, really the rest of the team, that we’re in trouble. I mean, but guys always feel like they’re in it with the way he handles himself. “

Mahomes has topped the league’s top six teams in terms of goalscoring record in each of the past four seasons. They currently lead the table with 30.4 points/match.

The Chiefs needed every inch of Mahomes’ 446 yards on Sunday. His 68 passes are ranked third in a single game in NFL history (Drew Bledsoe throws 70 in 1994). His 63 yards of charge established a career high. It was his second with a 500-yard pass and dash, second all-time (Ben Roethlisberger has four).

Mahomes the way he was trained for such moments at Texas Tech. He participated in a lot of high scoring matches, some of which he lost after scoring more than 50 points.

“You have to have urgency and you try to have urgency early in the game, but it even increases whenever you’re down like that,” Mahomes said. “You have to put points on the board, you have to kind of press the problem. I think our team responds well to that.”

The captain has succeeded so many times after falling behind at least 10 points that they feel they can do it every time.

“We knew we could increase our scores quickly,” Kelce said. “We know what we’re capable of and that kind of helps you gauge what’s possible and what’s not. You can’t let doubt seep in at any point in the game. As soon as you let doubt seep in. you can also throw the white flag.”

FORGET IN THE CHILDREN these major comebacks are partly assumed by the protection of the Chiefs.

The Chiefs are 3-0 down after having a double-digit deficit this season. Their defense assisted in the comeback victory by scoring in two of those three games.

Rookie winger Jaylen Watson returned a 99-yard intercept for a touchdown in a comeback win over the Chargers. Frank Clark there was a safety in the win against the 49ers.

After losing to Henry in the second half, the captain’s defense kept the Titans to a goal in the second half and overtime on Sunday.

Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo said the job is made easier because of what the Leaders can accomplish when attacking.

Spagnuolo said: “These words came out of my mouth. [is going to score]. ‘ There’s that. I think our boys are very confident that if we can get the balance back by keeping them out of the end zone and off the scoreboard, our offense will have to do something to spin. come back. ”

The captain has failed to win after falling behind at least 10 since a 27-3 loss to the Titans in Week 7 last season.

“There was a bit of luck but I think our boys did a great job of focusing on the present and living in the moment,” Bieniemy said. “And we talk about it and discuss it all the time. It’s all about making the next play the most important.”
