John Deere Classic 2022 leaderboard: JT Poston takes the lead by two strokes with 62 in round 1
SILVIS, Ill. (AP) – JT Poston shot a 9 under 62 on Thursday to take a two-stroke lead in the PGA Tour’s John Deere Classic.
Coming in second last week in Connecticut, Poston won a par-5 second and made seven birdies in a no-magic round at TPC Deere Run.
“Obviously that’s why you practice and why you work as hard as you do when you play the game,” Poston said. “Anytime you can have those rounds where you really get low and make no mistakes, no errors is a bonus. That’s why you work and why. you practice the way we do.”
Canadian Michael Gligic is second at 64, playing in the last group of the day from the first tee. Vaughn Taylor and Christopher Gotterup followed at 65. Ricky Barnes, Denny McCarthy, Chris Naegel and Dylan Fritteli shot 66.
“I struggled a little bit physically and wasn’t very good,” Taylor said. “But when I walked in here, I said to myself: ` `You know, I know this course, how to play it. Just do it.” That’s how I did it today. Just try not to think about it too much and just play golf. “
Poston won the 2019 Wyndham Championship for his only PGA Tour title.
“I would say that over the last few months it has been in a good position,” Poston said. “Just haven’t seen the results yet. Well, Hilton Head, I’ve had a good week. Wells Fargo, good week. Last week, playing well. So I think it’s starting to come together and see. results and see the photos and build that confidence back in my batting.
Iowa native Zach Johnson, 2012 winner, opened with 69 afternoon winds in his 20th straight start in the event.
“It’s as hard as I’ve seen this golf course play for a long time,” Johnson said. “Okay, you have some reels, so if you land it on the fairway, it bounces, that’s fun. But that’s hard.”
Defending champion Lucas Glover shot 74.
