Proton says partnership with smart will teach it how to assemble electric cars – will car #1 become CKD in the future?
Proton is not only set to experience in electric vehicle (EV) from a retail point of view through a partnership with Smart Automobile, because the partnership will also allow the national carmaker to learn how to assemble them, Deputy CEO Roslan Abdullah said in a statement. Bernama report.
“The partnership with Smart Cars and Smart Car Delivery will teach us (Proton) how to assemble electric vehicles locally and give us experience and knowledge about the assembly process, ‘ he said during a discussion at the council Invest Malaysia Series 2: The Road to EV the event was held earlier today.

Proton says it’s aiming for a mid-sale 800 and 1,000 units of vehicles from the smart brand every year in Malaysia, and therefore the initial path will be a lot of complete units. However, the ambition to increase the total number of smartphones to the cumulative 10,000 mark by 2027 suggests that domestic assembly may eventually come into play.
As for the plans for Proton to develop and sell its own electric vehicle, which it hopes will start working in 2027Roslan said Malaysia needs to produce its own electric vehicles, given the growth trajectory the segment is expected to hit in the coming years, New Straits Times report.
“It’s imperative for Proton and other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to produce their own electric vehicles because as you can see globally, electric vehicles are what’s going to be here,” he added.
