Preview Jaime Munguia vs Jimmy Kelly
By: Sean Crose
With a record of 39 wins and no losses, Jaime Munguia returned to the ring Saturday night to face Jimmy Kelly 26-2 in a scheduled 12th round 12 super middleweight title match. The battle will take place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California and will be streamed live on the DAZN streaming service, starting at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. Former middleweight player Munguia is looking to perform well in his super-middleweight debut. With that in mind, the Tijuana-born player plans to return to middleweight after this game to get a big fight with the likes of Jermall Charlo. However, it is important for the 25-year-old to get past the 29-year-old Kelly first.
For Kelly, Saturday’s fun represents the opportunity of a lifetime. By defeating a big name boxer, Kelly strengthens her own chances of becoming a big name boxer. After all, there is a reason the Englishman is dominating like Munguia in the short term, that reason is his undefeated and widely publicized opponent. Kelly’s final fight was a unanimous decision to win against the previously undefeated Kanat Islam in February. Furthermore, Kelly, who was once stopped by Liam Smith, hasn’t lost a single match in over four years.
For Munguia, the man’s final fight was a 3-round annihilation of
D’Mitrius Ballard returns in February. Once known for his thunderous punching prowess, he scored knockouts in two of the five fights he had in middleweight. Kelly, on the other hand, stopped less than half of her opponents in the distance. His last knockout win was against Harry Matthews in 2021. Matthews had a 16-49-3 record at the time. Although Kelly doesn’t seem to stand a chance, one never knows. This is boxing, after all.
